Women's Lax Edges RIT in OT, 13-12

Engineers withstand second half comeback from Tigers in Liberty League victory

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Erin Goodwin scored the overtime-winner to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team past Rochester Institute of Technology, 13-12, at Renwyck Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-2-1 (3-1 Liberty League), while the Tigers drop to 4-5 (2-2 Liberty League).

Goodwin (Kensington, CT/Berlin) took a feed from senior Morgan Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and rifled a shot past RIT freshman netminder Paulina Goodermote (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) with 2:23 to play in overtime. The game-winner was Goodwin's third tally on the year.

Rensselaer scored seven of the game's first eight goals in the opening 11 minutes. Junior Maddy Aslansan (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) had three of them, including her team-leading 20th goal of the season.

The Tigers went on a 4-2 run to close out the half, including bookend tallies from sophomore Alanna Fallone (Penfield, NY/Penfield), cutting the RPI advantage to 9-5 at the break. Senior Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) had two of her four helpers over that stretch.

After Rensselaer senior Allie Claroni (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) made it 10-5 early in the second half, the Tigers pounced for four of the next five goals to draw within 10-8, with 20 minutes to go.

RPI junior Lauren Guiry (Danbury, CT/Danbury) halted the run with her 10th goal of the season, but RIT came back three straight goals to tie it at 11-11 with 12:55 on the clock. Freshman Colette Rigas (Marietta, NY/Marcellus) had the first two tallies on the run, with classmate Meghan Donahue (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) potting the game-tier.

The Tigers then took their first and only lead of the game (12-11) with 11:31 remaining, as Fallone scored her sixth of the game and 30th on the year, with an assist to Livecchi.

After over seven minutes of back and forth play, the Engineers finally tied the game at 12-all, when Doyle scooped up a loose ball just outside the goalie circle and stuck it home with 4:12 to go.

RIT had a pair of chances as the clock ran down in regulation, but one shot went wide, before senior Maegan Schmauder (Franklin, MA/Franklin) saw her attempt stopped and held by RPI junior goalie Aleena Milinski (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk).

The Engineers, who had the only two shots of the overtime session, finished with a 33-28 edge overall, as well as a 24-20 advantage in ground balls. Milinski (5-2-1) had eight saves, while Goodermote (1-1) finished with seven in relief of starter Rebekah Snitkoff (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Warde).

RPI is back in action on Tuesday at Skidmore College (7pm), while the Tigers travel to St. Lawrence on Tuesday (4pm).
