TROY, N.Y. – Junior captain
Abbey Salvon had a team-high three points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 10-6 victory over Williams College, on Tuesday night at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers improve to 1-0-1, while the Ephs drop to 0-2.
Salvon (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) followed goals from classmate
Maddy Aslansan (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) and freshman
Nora Molino (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) with one of her own at 12:13 of the first half to give the hosts an early 3-0 lead. Molino's tally was the first of her collegiate career.
Williams junior Emma Tenbarge (Peapack, NJ/Bernards) then set up senior Kat Fearey (Duxbury, MA/Milton Academy) for the Ephs' first goal, before netting her own to cut the deficit to 3-2.
RPI sophomore
Becca De Rosa (Fair Lawn, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) made it 4-2 with 12:56 left in the half, before Ephs sophomore Kara Wollmers (Houston, TX/St. John's School) answered five minutes later.
The Engineers then went a 3-0 run that spanned halftime – taking a 7-3 advantage 5:24 into the second. Senior
Allie Claroni (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) capped the run with her second of the season from junior
Erin Goodwin (Kensington, CT/Berlin).
???????Wollmers and junior Suzanna Penikis (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) brought Williams to within 7-5, just nine minutes into the second half, but RPI tightened up defensively, surrendering just a single goal over the final 21:49.
???????Salvon potted her second of the game and fifth of the year to make it 8-5. Aslansan and junior
Lauren Guiry (Danbury, CT/Danbury) added insurance goals in the final two minutes.
Junior goaltender
Aleena Milinski (Beaver Falls, PA/Blachawks) finished with seven saves, while Williams sophomore Kami Cisneros (Lakewood, CO/Mullen) had six at the other end of the field.
RPI's win was just its third in 10 games against the Ephs, but it was the second straight at home. The Engineers are now 3-2 all-time in Troy against Williams.
The Engineers finished with a 27-21 edge in shots and a 10-7 ground ball edge. Williams went 14 for 19 on the clear, with Rensselaer concluded the night at 14 for 23.
Next on the docket for RPI is Colorado College on Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo. Opening draw is scheduled for 2pm ET. Williams hosts Trinity (CT) on Saturday at 1pm.
