WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute traveled to No. 13 Williams College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference double-header. The Ephs, the first nationally ranked team the Engineers have faced this season, swept RPI 13-2 in six innings in game one and 5-0 in game two.
The first game was scoreless for the first inning and half until Williams (20-4) broke through the Engineer defense in the bottom of the second. Breanna Martinez doubled to left field to bring home Margo Beck and Rebecca Duncan to put the Ephs up 2-0.
In the bottom of the third, Williams' Mackenzie Murphy followed up a Lexi Curt triple with a homerun down the left field line put the Ephs up 4-0. Three at bats later, Kristin Mapes knocked a three-run homer over the left field fence to make the score 7-0 in favor of the purple and gold.
RPI (13-7) ended the shutout for Mapes in the top of the fifth when sophomore

Up 7-2, Mapes hit her second homer of the season when the sophomore went yard over the centerfield fence to bring home two runs and extend the lead to 9-2.
After a scoreless sixth inning by Rensselaer, the Engineer defense posted two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Beck crushed the ball over the centerfield fence for a walk-off, grand slam to enact the eight-run rule.
Mapes (4-1) was credited with the 13-2 win on a five strikeout effort over 4.1 innings in the circle. Duncan came in on 1.2 innings of relief with no runs against, one hit and one strikeout. RPI's
Sarah Harms (9-4) picked up the loss over 4.1 innings with strikeouts. Freshman
Taylor Spargo made her collegiate debut with 1.1 innings recorded in the circle with two hits.
Caswell and Greco led RPI on offense with a combined 3-for-5 effort with one double, two RBI's, one run and one stolen base. Mapes recorded game-high five RBI's while going 3-for-3 with two homeruns and two runs. Adding to the Ephs offense was Beck on a 1-for-1 effort with three walks, a grand slam, four RBI's and four runs.
In game two, Williams went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Martinez hit a solo homer to right center field. Beck extended the Ephs' lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when the senior went yard over the left field fence.
Williams continued their scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Riley Salvo scored off a Jessica Kim single to centerfield. Cris McElhinney then put the Ephs up 4-0 when she scored on a Curt sacrifice fly to right center. Williams added its fifth and final run of the inning and game when Kim scored on a Murphy RBI.
Murphy (8-0) was credited with the complete game win and remains undefeated on the season. The junior gave up only four hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Rensselaer's
Jaime Cleasby (4-3) picked up the loss on a complete game, two strikeout effort.
Sophomore
Veronica DeStefano led the Engineer offense going 3-for-3. Meanwhile, Martinez paced Williams going 1-for-2 with a home run, RBI and run.
RPI returns to Troy for a set of Liberty League double headers against Rochester on Friday (3pm) and RIT on Saturday (1pm).
