White Walk-Off Completes Softball's Sweep Over U-of-R

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Christine White hit a walk-off double in game two to complete Rensselaer's conference sweep over the University of Rochester at Doris Robison Field Friday afternoon. The first game ended 5-0 while the second game resulted in a 6-5 final.

Sophomore Maddie Provencher led the Engineer offense with a combined 4-for-6 effort and 1.500 slugging percentage with a three-run homer, two doubles, six RBI's and two runs. White was a combined 5-for-8 with two doubles, four RBI's and two runs. RPI (15-7, 5-1 Liberty League) pitcher Sarah Harms (11-4) picked up both wins over 10.0 innings of work. The senior held Rochester (7-12, 0-2 Liberty League) to a.282 batting average.

The Engineers went up early in the bottom of the first when senior Victoria Greco scored an unearned run off a White single down the right field line. Two innings later, Provencher extended the RPI lead to 4-0 with a three-run homer next to the left field foul pole.

With a runner on first and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Rochester's Marissa Russo made the defensive play of the game with a diving catch in center fielder to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, White hit her second RBI single of the game to bring home Greco and put RPI up 5-0.

The Engineers were able to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board in the top of the seventh when sophomore Cam Caswell made an infield diving catch on a pop up to end the game.

Harms was credited with the complete game 5-0 shutout with two strikeouts. Rochester's Hannah Leahy (4-8) picked up the loss with three strikeouts.

Provencher and White led the RPI offense with a combined effort of 5-for-7 with five RBI's and two runs. Greco also had a multi-hit game going 3-for-2 with two runs and a stolen base. The Yellow Jackets were were paced at the plate by Leahy and Alexis Pope with two hits apiece.

In game two, Rochester took the first lead of the game when Jocelynn Blackshear scored on double steal with Gianna Melillo.

RPI's Jaime Cleasby and the Rensselaer defense retired the side in the top of the third when first baseman Steph Cavallaro ended the inning after extending her glove on a foul ball over the fence on the right field line.

Rensselaer tied the game in the bottom of the third when Greco scored off an RBI single from White. With two outs on the board and the bases loaded, Provencher hit a bases clearing double down the right field line to give the Engineers a 4-1 lead.

The Yellow Jackets cut the RPI lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth when Bleackshear scored due to a Rensselaer fielding error. In the top of the fifth Russo scored after Lydia Petricca singled through the left side. The Engineers then put two outs on the board after a flyout and 9-6-2 relay. However, Rochester's Blackshear crushed a two-run homer of the left field fence to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Rensselaer had Provencher on third and Devan Puhl on first with one out on the board. Sophomore Veronica DeStefano hit home Provencher on an RBI to second to tie the game 5-5.

With the game tied going into the final inning, Cavallaro made back-to-back split stretches at first base to record the first two outs. Harms, who came in on relief in the top of the fifth, then forced a fly out to center to retire the side.

Caswell led off the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff double to centerfield. After a Yellow Jacket pitching change was made, White hit a walk-off double to center to bring home Caswell on a nail biting play at home.

Harms was credited with the win after 3.0 innings of work. Cleasby held Rochester to four hits over 4.0 innings. The Yellow Jacket's Elizabeth Bourne (3-3) picked up the loss after six complete innings in the circle.

Provencher and White led the RPI offense again going a combined 4-for-7 with five RBI's and two runs. Caswell also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with two runs. Blackshear had a game-high three runs for Rochester while going 2-for-2 with a two run homer, a double and two RBI's.
