Engineers Softball Sweeps RIT

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Rebecca Kienz combined for five RBI's to lead Rensselear in two five inning wins over conference foe RIT at Doris Robison Field Saturday afternoon. The Engineers took game one 11-0 with the second game ending 13-2.
 
Kienz combined for a 3-for-5 effort with three runs and one stolen base. Sophomore Maddie Provencher combined for a .800 batting average and 1.200 slugging percentage off two singles, two doubles, three runs and two RBI's. Rounding out the offensive leaders for RPI (17-7, 7-1 Liberty League) was sophomore Veronica DeStefano with a team high four runs while going 2-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI's and one stolen base.
 
Game started scoreless for two and half innings. RPI's offense then went into full throttle scoring eight runs in the bottom of the third. The Engineers' saw RBI's from Provencher, Kienz, DeStefano Cam Caswell, and Kyla Anderson.

Rensselaer added to its run total in the bottom of the fourth with RBI's from Provencher, Chelsea Elliott and Victoria Greco to go up 11-0.
 
RPI pitcher Sarah Harms closed out the top of the fifth by retiring the side and enacting the eight-run mercy rule.
 
Harms (12-4) was credited with the one hit, complete game shutout. The senior recorded her second shutout of the season while registering a career-high six strikeouts. RIT's (4-12, 1-3 Liberty League) Lauren Mahar (1-7) picked up the loss with eight unearned runs against and three strikeouts.
 
RPI was led at the plate by Provencher with a 3-for-3 effort with two doubles, two RBI's and one run. Erin Guinan recorded the Tigers' only hit with one double.
 
In game two, the Engineers jumped up to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when DeStefano scored off a Christine White double to left field. Caswell then scored on the next at-bat off an Anderson RBI. Rensselaer added their third run of the inning when White scored on wild pitch.
 
RIT responded in the top of the third when Danielle Hotz scored off a single RBI from Olivia Doret.
 
With the score favoring RPI at 3-1 in the bottom of the third, Rensselaer had their second eight-run inning of the day with RBI's from Caswell, White, Kienz, DeStefano and Greco.
 
The Tigers cut the RPI lead down to 11-2 in the top of the first when Madisen Baldwin scored on a Hotz single up the middle. In the bottom of the inning, the Engineers added two more runs when Provencher and Steph Cavallaro scored off a Kienz single up the middle to make the score 13-2.
 
With the Tigers needing four runs to extend the game, RPI pitcher Jaime Cleasby and the Rensselaer defense retired three batters in four at bats to end the game.
 
Cleasby (5-3) was credited with the complete game win with seven strikeouts. RIT's Tori Adler (2-3) picked up the loss with 2.0 innings of work. Mahar came in on 2.0 innings of relief for the Tigers with two strikeouts.
 
DeStefano led RPI at the plate going 1-for-1 with a double, three RBI's, three runs, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base. Hotz paced RIT on offense going 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run.
 
RPI currently tops the Liberty League with a 7-1 record. Tied for second are Ithaca (6-2) and Union (3-1) while Skidmore rounds out the top four at 3-3.
