TROY, N.Y. – Senior Storm Sideleau and sophomore Kelly Pushie combined for 10 points to lead the Vassar College women's lacrosse team to a 12-10 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Friday afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Brewers improve to 4-8 overall (3-4 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 6-5-1 (4-4 Liberty League).
RPI got the scoring started five minutes in, as juniors
Abbey Salvon (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) and
Maddy Aslansan (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) tallied two minutes apart. Senior
Morgan Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) earned the helper on the opening marker.
The Brewers answered to tie the game at 2-2, with junior Fiona MacLeod (Garden City, NY/Garden City) and Sideleau (Contoocook, NH/Kimball Union Academy) netting goals at 6:48 and 8:01 of the opening stanza.
Doyle and Salvon then shot back for RPI, which regained a two-goal advantage (4-2) with 19:08 to go in the first.
Vassar then closed out the half on a 6-1 run, highlighted by two goal each from Sideleau and classmate Olivia O'Loughlin (Morristown, NJ/Oak Knoll School of Holy Child), as well as a pair of assists by Pushie (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah). The final two tallies, which came at 16 and three seconds left in the period, respectively, gave the visitors an 8-5 lead.
Sideleau then opened the second half with a goal, just 1:01 in, to make it 9-5 – Vassar's largest on the day.
???????Aslansan potted her second of the game two minutes later and senior
Allie Claroni (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) added her first of the contest to pull the Engineers within 9-7.
The Brewers answered with two goals of their own, including Pushie's first of two in the second half to make it 11-7 with 19:04 to play.
Two more from Aslansan – her 32nd and 33rd on the season – came 31 seconds apart to draw within 11-9, but Pushie pushed the lead back to three (12-9) two minutes later.
???????Salvon netted the game's final goal with 10:42 to go, with an assist to classmate
Michelle Bolger (Williston, VT/Rice Memorial). Vassar was able to run down the clock the rest of the way, taking a pair of late shot clock violations in the process, to keep RPI's chances at a minimum.
Vassar won the draw control battle, 14-9, and collected 28 ground balls to RPI's 25. Senior netminder Emily Chancey (Hollywood, FL/University School of NSU) made nine saves for the Brewers to improve to 4-7 on the year, while junior
Aleena Milinski (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk) had 11 stops at the other end of the field.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon for their Senior Day matchup with Bard College (2pm). Vassar visits No. 20 Ithaca tomorrow (2pm).
