Baseball Drops Two at RIT

Tigers open four-game set with wins of 5-4 and 6-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rochester Institute of Technology baseball team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a doubleheader this afternoon by scores of 5-4 and 6-0. With the wins, the Tigers improve to 10-9 overall (6-5 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 13-15 (7-6 Liberty League).

In Game 1, the Tigers came back from a 4-3 deficit to earn a series-opening victory. Brian Reed (3-2) threw the first 5.1 innings to to earn the win, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked five. Brett Bouchard picked up his first save of the season, working 1.2 perfect innings with three strikeouts.

RPI sophomore Griffin Kelley was saddled with the loss, giving up a run on two hits with four strikeouts. Freshman Chris Grome started for the Engineers, surrendering three runs on two hits in 1.2 innings. He struck out two and walked four. 

RIT answered two second inning RPI runs with three in the bottom half. Daniel Zeglen delivered the big blow in the frame, plating a pair with a single to left. The Engineers came right back to take a 4-3 lead in the third, thanks to an RBI-triple from senior Ethann Meister and a run-scoring single by sophomore Jack Vaccari.

The Tigers pulled even thanks to an error in the fourth, before taking the lead for good in the fifth.

In Game 2, Stevie Branche (2-1) and Michael Campbell combined to throw a two-hit shutout, with Patrick Mylott, Benjamin Terzini and Jason Schulz each picked up a pair of hits at the plate.

RIT broke a scoreless deadlock with a single run in the fourth, as a bases-loaded walk to Navada Waterman scored Zeglen from third. 

The Tigers then broke the game open in the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits and an error. Schulz drove in two with a single to left, before a sac fly and two-run single from Dalton Murray completed the scoring.

Junior Brendan McNerney (2-4) took the loss for the Engineers, allowing four runs on four hits over 6.0 innings. He struck out 10 and walked seven. 

Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon for a twin bill with first pitch scheduled for 12pm.
