ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sophomore
Christopher Palmiero threw a complete game and junior
Eric Zeppa delivered the walk-off hit to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a doubleheader split with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on Sunday afternoon. The Engineers, who won 3-2, before falling, 4-2, are now 14-16 overall (8-7 Liberty League), while the Tigers are 11-10 (7-6 Liberty League).
Palmiero allowed two runs on just one hit over 7.0 innings to improve to 3-1 on the year. He struck out nine and walked two, needing 105 pitches to pick up his second complete game of the season. His counterpart, Jameson Moran, took a no-decision allowing a pair of runs on three hits over 5.1 innings, with four strikeouts and three walks.Â
The first run of the game went the Tigers' way, thanks to a wild pitch in the top of the fifth. Rensselaer answered with unearned run in the bottom half, as
Austin Lawrence scampered home on an RIT fielding error. The two teams then traded runs in the sixth, setting up the walk-off win in the seventh.
Christian Spagnuola led off the frame with a single to left center.
Richard Drum then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, sending Spagnuola to second. The Engineers then brought
Jake Defayette on to pinch run for Spagnuola and called upon Zeppa to pinch hit. He laced the game-winning double to left to give RPI it's first win of the weekend.
Game two saw the Engineers score first on an RBI-triple from
Ethann Meister in the bottom of the first inning.
Five scoreless frames followed, before RIT was finally able to break through against Rensselaer starter
Erick Zecha, scoring three times in the top of the seventh. Navada Waterman and Joey Mylott each delivered run-scoring hits in the inning.
Each team then scored runs on ground ball outs in the eighth, keeping the hosts' lead at 4-2 after eight innings.
Austin Lawrence was able to reach with a two-out single in the ninth, but Daniel Capra was able to shut the door on the hill for his first save of the campaign.
Zecha (1-2) was the tough luck loser, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings. He recorded five strikeouts and one walk. Daniel Zeglen (1-2) earned the victory, allowing a run on four hits in 7.0 innings, with eight strikeouts and one walk.
The Engineers are back in action on Tuesday, when they visit Williams College for a non-league contest (4pm). RIT hosts Clarkson University for two on Wednesday (1pm).
