Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Senior
Ethann Meister went 3 for 5 with a home run to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 16-7 victory over Williams College, in non-league action on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 15-16 overall, while the Ephs drop to 8-16.
Mike Stamas got the scoring started with an RBI-double in the bottom of the first inning to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
RPI took its first lead of the game in the top of third, on a two-run single off the bat of Meister, before classmate
Weston Hawkins swatted a two-run double down the line in left in the fourth. Before the inning was over, an
Austin Lawrence groundout plated Hawkins for a 5-1 RPI advantage.
The Engineers' lead balooned to 6-1 in the fifth, before the Ephs mounted a comeback in the sixth and seventh frames.
Adam Regensburg drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 6-2 game, which was followed by an RBI-groundout, sandwiched by a pair of run-scoring wild pitches, which cut the RPI lead to 6-5. Kellen Hathaway then gave Williams the lead (7-6) in the seventh, lifting a two-run homer over the fence.
Not to be deterred, the Engineers came right back with a seven-run top of the eighth, amazingly with the benefit a run-scoring hit in the frame. Three runs came across on bases-loaded walks, while two more scored on hit batters. A wild pitch and a sacrifice fly allowed for the other two runs to score.
Meister added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth, launching his team-leading fourth home run of the year - a three-run shot that also scored classmate
J.T. Sawyer and Lawrence.
The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they host a four-game series with Clarkson, beginning on Saturday (1pm). Williams visits Union College tomorrow (4pm).
