Softball Splits with Union

SCHENECTADY, NY - Freshman Kyla Anderson was a combined 5-for-6 with two RBI's, two stolen bases and one run in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) Liberty League split with conference rival Union on Sunday afternoon. The Engineers took game one in six innings 9-0 while the Dutchwomen won game two 6-5 on a Kendall Rogoff walk-off double.

Adding to the RPI (13-5, 3-11 Liberty League) offense was senior Christine White with a combined 5-for-7 effort with two runs and one RBI. Rensselaer pitcher Sarah Harms threw an impressive two-hitter shutout in game one with five strikeouts.

The Engineers started the scoring in the top of the first of game one when senior Victoria Greco scored after sophomore Maddie Provencher drew a walk. The following at bat, sophomore Steph Cavallaro doubled to right field for two RBI's on Cam Caswell and White runs. RPI extended its lead to 4-0 after Provencher crossed home on an Anderson single. Cavallaro scored Rensselaer's fifth run of the inning off a Rebecca Kienz RBI.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Anderson scored off a Veronica DeStefano single.

Up 6-0 in the top of the sixth, the Engineers added a run when Caswell scored on a Union (3-11, 1-1 Liberty League) error. White scored the next at bat on a double-steal with Cavallaro to make the score 8-0. Cavallaro then scored the final run of the game when Anderson singled.

Harms (9-3) was credited with the win while Union's Dana Donlinko (1-6) with two strikeouts over five innings pitched.

In game two, DeStefano scored in the top of the first to put RPI up 1-0. Union responded in the bottom of the inning when Dolinko tied the game on a Rogoff double to right field. Courtney Casey gave the Dutchwomen their first lead of the game when the senior scored off a Kim Puzo RBI. Union then extended its lead to 3-1 when Rogott scored off an error.

After four scoreless innings by both teams, RPI cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth when DeStefano scored after White hit a double. An inning later, RPI tied the game on a Kacie Herity run. Rensselaer then took its first lead since the top of the first on runs by DeStefano and Devan Puhl.

Down 5-3, Union cut down the lead to one run when Devon Hannel scored after Dolinko hit a single. Stuart Buxton then tied the game after a RPI error caused the run. With one out and Casey on first, Rogoff hit a walk-off double to bring Casey home and win the game.

Harms picked up the loss for RPI on relief while Makayla Koehler (1-2) with four strikeouts and only two earned runs against. Rensselaer's starting pitcher Jaime Cleasby pitched 6.1 innings with a season high nine strikeouts with only three earned runs against.

RPI remains atop of the Liberty League standings after the opening weekend with a 3-1 conference record. Ithaca and Union are tied for second with .500 records of 2-2 and 1-1.

Rensselaer is back in action on Apr. 11 when the Engineers travel to Williams for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30pm.
