ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Mitch Volis headed in the only goal of the game in the 110th minute to lift the ninth-ranked University of Rochester men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Friday night, in the season opener for both schools.
In the dying moments of the match, a partially cleared Yellowjackets corner kick was delivered back into the box for Voles, who was able to flick it past Rensselaer junior goalkeeper
Matt LaBranche and into the right side of the net. The tally, which was Volis' sixth career marker, came with 32 seconds on the clock and was Rochester's 20th shot attempt of the game.
Both teams had opportunities in regulation time, including an RPI header that found the crossbar, late in the first half. Rochester had a free header earlier in the frame, but LaBranche was able to make the to keep the game scoreless.
Rochester, which controlled play for the early stages of the first half, continued to pressure early in the second. The Engineers took the reins in the middle and late stages of the second, however, and turned in a handful of chances.
With 11 minutes to go in regulation, junior
Dylan Confair got on the end of a cross inside the 18, but his header did not have enough pace to beat Yellowjackets goalkeeper Patrick Conway. Freshman
Billy Chissoe then latched onto a through ball in the 84th minute, but his right-footed try was held by Conway as well.
The Yellowjackets could have put the game away early in the first overtime session, as a rebound fell to Aiden Miller with an open net in front of him, but his header sailed over the bar.
RPI looked to have won a penalty kick in the 93rd minute, but it went ungranted. The Engineers still created a chance at the far right post on the play, but junior
Austin Betterly saw his attempt rocket skyward.
LaBranche (0-1) and Conway (1-0) eached finished with five saves as the Yellowjackets earned eight corners to RPI's four. Engineers freshman
Paul Silva was issued the contests' only yellow card.
