TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Jacqui Richard scored a pair of second half goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Western Connecticut State in the season opener for both schools. With the win, the Engineers begin the year at 1-0, while the Colonials are 0-1.
Following a scoreless first half in which Rensselaer held a 14-4 shot advantage, it was the visitors who found the scoresheet, just a minute and 48 seconds into the second.
Junior Jenna Barron (New Milford, CT/New Milford) claimed a loose ball in the RPI penalty area and slotted home the opening tally, after a pair of Engineers defenders collided in an attempt to clear.
RPI drew even in the 49th minute, when Richard (Southwick, MA/Westminster School) turned towards the top of the 18 and ripped a right-footed shot into upper right corner for her first of the game.
The Engineers then earned an indirect free kick in the 67th minute, which Richard ripped off the wall. The rebound fell to senior
Catie Mann (Downington, PA/Downington STEM Academy), who found classmate
Maddie Steinmetz (Malvern, PA/West Chester East) to serve back into the area. Richard rose and headed in the eventual game-winner from just outside the six-yard box.
Rensselaer then held the Colonials without a shot over the next 20 minutes, as two late attempts from senior Lucy Daniels (Bethel, CT/Bethel) and sophomore Erika Quinones (Bridgeport, CT/Notre Dame Fairfield) were blocked and saved, respectively.
Junior
Maddie Roberts (St. Inigoes, MD/Westtown School) nearly got the Engineers on the board late in the first half, but her left-footed strike from distance found the crossbar. In the closing minute of the frame, Roberts saw her tight angle try stopped and held by Western Connecticut State sophomore goalie Alexis Lainchbury (Hopewell Junction, VT/John Jay).
Rensselaer finished with a 26-8 shot advantage, including 11-4 on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) made four saves.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Farmingdale State to close out the Engineers Cup (1:30pm). Western Connecticut takes on Buffalo State in the morning (11am).
