TROY, N.Y. - Julissa Martinez netted the game's only goal, 48 seconds into the overtime, to send the Farmingdale State University women's soccer team home with a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Rams improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Engineers drop to 1-1.
Martinez (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) got in behind the RPI defense and poked in her second overtime goal in as many games. After scoring in double-overtime on Friday night against Buffalo State, she netted the winner against the Engineers after a hard fought opening 90 minutes.
The Engineers carried play for much of the first half, building a 9-3 edge in shot attempts through 45 minutes of play. The Rams were able to keep RPI's scoring opportunities to a minimum after a flurry of early attempts from freshman
Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech) and sophomore
Olenka Soko (Fort Worth, TX/Byron Nelson).
Farmingdale forced a pair of first half saves from Rensselaer junior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern), including a 36th-minute try from junior Celine Cannizzaro (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Blue Point).Â
In the second half, the Rams outshot RPI, 8-7, despite playing much of the frame in their own end. An effort from junior Kelsy Rios (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) in the 59th minute was kept out by Lyons, before freshman Olympia Lewis (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) was denied three minutes later.
Wisnom had a couple more tries from distance during the middle stages of the second, with one flying just high and wide of the upper right corner. Freshman midfielder
Meagan Huang (Mountain View, CA/Los Altos) found solid contact on a shot from outside the 18 in the 69th minute, but it was stopped by Farmingdale junior goalkeeper Daniella Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka), who finished with six saves on the day.
The Engineers won three corner kicks over the final 15 minutes, but could not steer another shot on target the rest of the way. Wisnom added two more attempts at goal, but both went wide.
RPI wound up outshooting the Rams 16-12, but shots on goal were even at six apiece. The Engineers had the final corner advantage at a 7-1 margin.
The Engineers are back in action next Saturday, when they host Plattsburgh State at East Campus Stadium (7pm). Farmingdale hosts Trinity (CT) on Wednesday (6pm).
