Alexis Castrellon scored the game-winning goal in 102nd minute to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Sage College in double-overtime. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-4, while the Gators drop to 4-2-1.
Early in the second overtime session, junior
Jacqui Richard turns and dribbled into the Sage penalty area, before being taken down from behind for the penalty. Castrellon stepped up and buried a high shot for the win - her first goal of the year.
The Engineers opened the scoring in the 15th minute, when freshman striker
Whitney Wisnom took the ball to the end line up the left flank and set a cross into the middle of the area for classmate
Meagan Huang, who delivered a half volley finish into the roof of the net for her first collegiate tally. Wisnom's assist was her first point for the Engineers.
Sage equalized late in the opening half as Joleen Marfone headed in a corner from the left side by Hallie Klosterman. A high ball delivered towards the back post was met by Marfone, who netted her fourth goal of the season in the 43rd minute.
RPI outshot the Gators 21-12 in the match, including 14-6 on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (2-4) had five saves, while Sage's Mickaela Buzzy (4-2-1) had 12.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit Bard College in their Liberty League opener (2pm). Sage hosts Nazareth on Saturday (2pm).
