Field Hockey Defeats Saints, 3-2

Box Score | Game Highlights

TROY, N.Y. - Senior Casey Collette had a goal and an assist and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team scored three second half goals to come from behind and defeat St. Lawrence University, 3-2, in a Liberty League contest at Harkness Field. The Engineers even their conference record at 1-1, while the Saints fall to 1-1. SLU is now 3-5 overall and RPI is 1-7.

Trailing by a goal nine minutes into the second half, Rensselaer tied the game when sophomore Emma Lewis fired a shot through traffic from just inside the circle. Lewis scored her first of the season off a pass from Taylor Clink, who collected a corner feed from Collette.

Collette put RPI in front 13:50 later when she picked up a rebound and shot it toward the goal, where it deflected off a defender and into the cage. Jena Dolinar had the initial shot, but her attempt was stopped by Lindsey Houseman for a defensive save. The ball found Collette, who notched her second of the campaign. Mikaela DiBello, also a senior, made it a 3-1 lead when she took a pass from Nessa Costa, circled around a defender and swept a low shot into the net at the 67:38 mark. For DiBello, the goal was her team-leading fifth of the season.

St. Lawrence pulled to within a goal with 40 seconds left on a Cate MacKenzie drive off a penalty corner feed from Lucy Stillman, but the Engineers kept the Saints away from the circle for the final 40 seconds. Stillman, St. Lawrence's leading scorer, gave the visitors the lead with her sixth goal of the season at 19:47. Stationed on the far post, she took a pass through traffic from Isabel Thompson and tapped it across the goal line.

Senior Rachel Kaufman earned the win in the goal, making nine saves, including five in the second half. Sydney Glacin had three saves with two coming in the second frame.

St. Lawrence had the advantage in total shots (17-15), while Rensselaer had one more corner than the Saints (11-10). The teams combined for 13 of the game's 21 corners in the final 35 minutes.

Rensselaer returns to the field on Tuesday when it travels to Utica College for a non-league game (7pm). St. Lawrence next plays next Saturday against league for Vassar College at 1pm.
