Skidmore Stops Women's Soccer, 1-0

Thoroughbreds net first half goal and hold on for league win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Melissa Haas scored the game's only goal and Ava Keller made five saves to lead the Skidmore College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 5-3 overall (2-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 4-5 (1-1 Liberty League).

Haas gave the hosts the lead for good in the 26th minute, heading home a cross from the right side by Courtney Shaw. Dribbling to within a yard of the endline, Shaw sent a driven ball towards the edge of the six that Haas sent into the top right corner of the net.

Skidmore nearly made it 2-0 early in the second half, but Shaw's first time volley was stopped and held by Rensselaer junior goalkeeper Joey Lyons. Ten minutes later, Olivia Allen got into the act, sending a left-footed shot on goal that Lyons was able to keep out.

RPI's best chance to equalize came in the 71st minute, when senior Catie Mann found junior Emily Kaplan on a run down the middle of the field. Kaplan got in behind the Thoroughbreds defense, but her left-footed try was swallowed up by Keller.

The Engineers earned a corner in the final minute of the game, which popped out to the top of the box for junior Jeanine Moreau, but her shot from distance missed high and wide.

Rensselaer is back in action on Wednesday, when it heads to St. Lawrence for a midweek league match (4pm). Skidmore visits Hartwick on Tuesday (7pm).
