BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, eventually building it to five goals, and the Gulls defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 7-2, in a non-league field hockey contest. Endicott improves to 2-1, while the Engineers drop to 0-4.
Kristen McCarthy had two goals and an assist and Julie Champigny and Jaylin Grabau both had a pair of tallies to lead Endicott. Taylor Farrin made five saves in the win.
Freshman
Marissa Florio stopped 22 shots on the other end for Rensselaer, which got goals from
Casey Collette and
Mikaela DiBello. Florio, making her first career start, stopped 16 of 21 shots in the first half and six of eight in the second.Â
Maggie O'Reilly tallied the game's first goal when she scored off a hard shot after receiving a corner feed from Sydney Poulin at 5:06. Just under three minutes later, Champigny tipped in a cross from McCarthy to double the lead.
Grabau scored her first of the contest with a tap-in at 12:23 and Champigny's second came 2:20 later with a rebound marker. After McCarthy scored unassisted at 21:05, Rensselaer freshman
Jessie House picked up a rebound and tipped it to Collette, who scored her second goal in as many games. RPI sustained the pressure and DiBello beat Farrin for her second in the last two games just 1:39 after Collette's goal.
The second half featured two goals, both by Endicott, who had a 41-11 lead in shots in the game with a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners.Â
RPI is right back in action on Wednesday at 5pm when it hosts New Paltz in a non-league game on Harkness Field.
