Wisnom's Hat Trick Powers Women's Soccer

Engineers shutout Mount Holyoke, 4-0, on Wednesday night

TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Whitney Wisnom netted a hat trick to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Mount Holyoke College, on Wednesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-3-2 overall, while the Lyons drop to 2-7-1.

Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech.) got the scoring started in the 13th minute of play, receiving a pass from senior Emily Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) near the top of the box and ripped a right-footed shot inside the right post.

Senior Grace Heine (Lee, NH/Oyster River) made it 2-0 in the 19th minute, when she corralled a clearing attempt and ripped home her first goal of the season from outside the 18. Her left-footed shot dipped under the bar and past Mount Holyoke junior keeper Maria-Lucia Delgado (Bronx, NY/Beacon School).

RPI took a 2-0 lead and a 10-0 shot advantage into halftime.

Ten minutes into the second half, Wisnom scored twice in less than a minute to double the Engineers' lead. First, she took two touches across the top of the box, before drilling a left-footed shot inside the left post. Only 48 seconds later, Kaplan found Wisnom streaking into the left side of the penalty area. She took a touch before slotting home her third goal of the game and fourth of the season.

The Engineers held Mount Holyoke without a shot attempt in the contest, as senior goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Marwood, MD/Southern) was not test in picking up her third shutout of the season and 20th of her career. She is five shy of the program record of 25, held by Laura Gregor '00. Delgado had four saves at the other end of the field.

Wisnom's hat trick was the second by an Engineers player this season. Kaplan netted three against Bard in RPI's 6-0 victory on September 21. The feat has only been accomplished four times in the last 11 years.

RPI is back in action on Saturday, when it travel to area-rival Union College (2pm). Mount Holyoke hosts Springfield College on Saturday (12pm).
