TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Meagan Lettko scored the only goal of the second half to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Clarkson University, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the Senior Day victory, the Engineers improve to 6-6-2 overall (3-4-0 Liberty League), while the Golden Knights drop to 9-6-1 (2-5-0 Liberty League).
Senior midfielder
Alexis Castrellon got the scoring started for the hosts in the sixth minute, when she converted a penalty kick after she was fouled in the box. Castrellon stepped and buried her first goal of the season – and fifth her of her career – into the left side netting.
Clarkson pulled even in the 15th minute, when Giulia Mahoney stole the ball in the attacking third and found Camryn Careccia streaking up the right side of the field. Careccia took a shot from outside the penalty area that found the top left corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
RPI answered less than four minutes later, as sophomore
Whitney Wisnom made a driving run up the left flank before cutting across the end line. She moved the ball over to her right foot, before smashing home her team-leading fifth goal of the season, short side.
Mahoney then netted her sixth of the season to once again draw level. Off a free kick, Allison Coon got her foot a loose ball in the box that looped towards the left post. Mahoney was there to tap in, tying the game at 2-2 in the 27th minute.
The game remained tied through halftime, with RPI holding an 8-6 edge in shots.
Senior
Meagan Lettko broke the deadlock in the 67th minute, heading home her third goal of the year off a corner kick from Castrellon. The inswinging cross was delivered perfectly to the edge of the six, where Lettko leapt to power in the even game-winning tally.
A late flurry in the RPI box was all Clarkson could muster the rest of the way, as the Engineers were able to hold on for the victory and a crucial three points in the standings.
Senior goalkeeper
Joey Lyons (4-6-2) did not make a save in picking up the victory, while Emma Timerman (1-2-0) had four stops to her credit at the other end of the field. RPI finished with a 12-9 shot advantage, including a game-high four from Wisnom.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Vassar College (3pm), while Golden Knights travel to St. Lawrence University on Tuesday (3pm).
