TROY, N.Y. -
Charisse Stakutis scored on Senior Day, but it was not enough as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to Oneonta in a non-league game at Harkness Field. The contest was the last for Stakutis and classmates
Katina Shiomos and
Claire Schmittinger.
Following a scoreless first quarter in which both teams had two shots on goal, Stakutis, an attack, put the Engineers in front when she re-directed a diagonal feed from the top of the circle by Shiomos into the cage with just 12 seconds left in the first half.
RPI had an 8-5 edge in shots in the first 30 minutes with both teams registering three penalty corners.
Oneonta needed just 2:55 of the second half to tie the game as Jessica Kehoe finished a Sophia Little set-up. Chloe Lynch scored unassisted with four minutes left in the frame and Little finished the scoring with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Red Dragons (9-9) had a 16-6 advantage in shots in the second half, including 9-3 on goal. They had six total penalty corners while the Engineers (0-17) had five.
Jen Richardson, a freshman, stopped eight shots for RPI, which got a defensive save from
Emma Lewis. Kristy Campana made nine saves for Oneonta, which plays in the SUNYAC Tournament on Wednesday at Geneseo (4pm).
