Jonny Angbazo both scored 15 points,
Mason Memmelaar added 14 and seven other Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes registered at least one point as the Engineers combined to shoot 47.6% from the field in defeating Mount Saint Mary College 83-54 in a non-conference men's basketball game at East Campus Arena. RPI evens its record at 2-2, while the Knights drop to 0-4.
Rensselaer made 14 of 29 (48.3%) of its shots in the first half and 16 of 34 (47.1%) in the second on its way to its second consecutive win. The Engineers held a 45-22 lead at halftime behind nine points from both Angbazo and Dominic Black and eight from Mahoney. Defensively, they held MSMCÂ to 37.5% (9 of 24) shooting and caused 13 turnovers to build a lead to as many 23 points. RPI had 17 points off turnovers in the first 30 minutes.
The Engineers increased its advantage to as many as 32 points in the second half, thanks in part to a 10-0 run.
Angbazo, a freshman, made 6 of 8 shots from the field, while Mahoney also made six baskets to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Memmelaar's 14 points came on 5 of 6 shooting and
Will Rubin was 4 of 9 to finish with 11 points. Black finished with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal.Â
Kendall Francis scored a game-high 21 points for the Knights, who shot 37.7% (20 of 53) for the game and had 21 turnovers.Â
MSMC is back on the court on December 2 when it hosts Hartwick College in a non-league game (7pm). Rensselaer plays again on Tuesday night at The Sage Colleges (7pm).
