Patrick Mahoney had a game-high 25 points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team to a 70-52 win over The Sage Colleges in a non-conference contest in Kahl Gym. RPI improved to 3-2, while the Gators drop to 4-3.
After holding a 13-7 lead with 14:27 left in the first half, the Gators let RPI creep back into the contest as they took 19-17 lead with 7:32 left as rookie forward
Jonny Angbazo (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) hit a three pointer. Rensselaer led 35-27 at the half as it held Sage to a 1 for 11 effort from three-point range.
Mahoney (Ossining, NY/Fordham Prep.) had 16 points in the first half after making 6-of-11 from the floor with a pair of three's. Angbazo added nine points in the first half for the Engineers.
Sage's sophomore guard Jalon Borders (Bartow, FL/Bartow) led the Gators in the first half with seven points. Sophomore forward Stuart Phair (Canberra, Australia/Tyler Christian School) had six first half points for Sage.
Angbazo finished with 16 points for the game off the bench having made 7-of-10 field goals with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Senior forward
Kevin Davis (Oxford, NY/Oxford Academy and Central School) led the Engineers in rebounding with nine caroms and added a pair of blocks and assists with go with his two points.
Sage's sophomore Deonte Sherwood (Orange Park, FL/Oakleaf) tallied 11 points to finish as the high scorer, while Phair added 10 points with eight rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Sage is back in action on December 3 traveling to MCLA for a non-conference game at 7 p.m. RPI is back in action on December 6 hosting Liberty League foe St. Lawrence University in a 7:30 p.m. match-up in the ECAV.
