Engineers net three third period goals to edge Golden Griffins

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Senior Mike Gornall scored the eventual game-winning goal late in the third period to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory of Canisius College, on Saturday night at HARBORCENTER. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-6-1, while the Golden Griffins drop to 2-8-0.

After a scoreless first period in which RPI held a 7-5 shot advantage, the hosts scored the game's first goal at 14:18 of the second. Nick Hutchison netted his fourth goal of the season from Grant Meyer and Hudson Lambert.

The Engineers pulled even just 40 seconds into the third period on senior captain Will Reilly's team-leading sixth goal of the season. Helpers on the power play tally went to classmates Patrick Polino and Chase Zieky.

Todd Burgess gave RPI it's first lead of the game at 14:46 of the third, sticking home his second goal in as many nights off a feed from freshman Cory Babichuk. Junior netminder Linden Marshall picked up the secondary assist Burgess' fourth of the year.

Just over a minutes later, the Golden Griffins pulled even at 2-2, when Simon Gravel beat Marshall for his third goal of the season. The lone assist was credited to Mitchell Martan.

Gornall then gave RPI the lead for good at 17:13, stuffing home a rebound at the right side of the crease. Freshman blueliner Simon Kjellberg to the shot from the point that was spilled by Canisius netminder Jacob Barczewski. Gornall jumped on the loose puck and tucked it home for his second goal of the year.

Marshall (2-1) finished with 23 saves, while Barczewski (0-3-0) had 28 stops at the other end of the field. RPI was 2 for 3 on the power play and Canisius went 0 for 3.
