Men's Hockey Falls at No. 15 UMass Lowell

River Hawks pick up 4-0 shutout in Turkey Leg Classic

LOWELL, Mass. – Connor Sodergren scored two goals and Tyler Wall made 23 saves to lead the No. 15 University of Massachusetts Lowell men's hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday afternoon in the Turkey Leg Classic at Tsongas Center. With the win, the River Hawks improve to 8-3-4 overall, while the Engineers drop to 5-7-1.

Wall (8-2-4) collected five saves in the first period, eight in the second and 13 in the third for his second shutout of the season and ninth of his career. RPI junior netminder Linden Marshall (2-2-0) finished with 21 stops.

The hosts got the scoring started at 3:51 of the first period after turning the Engineers over in the offensive zone. Carl Berglund found Zach Kaiser flying into the right circle for the finish. Matt Brown earned the secondary assist on Kaiser's fourth goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later, Lowell doubled its advantage on the power play, as Jon McDonald fired through a screen from the high slot for his second of the year. Moments after a 5-on-3 advantage had ended, Colin O'Neill sent the puck back to the blue line for McDonald, who beat Marshall low for the tally. Charlie Levesque picked up the first of his two assists in the game on the play.

Following a scoreless second period in which RPI held an 8-7 advantage in shots, the River Hawks made it 3-0 at 1:57 of the third. Sodergren was left alone in the low slot and Andre Lee found him with a pass out of the right corner for the goal. Levesque had the second assist.

Sodergren then capped the scoring at 14:30 of the third, when he threw the puck at the net from the right corner and deflected off Marshall and into the net. His second goal of the game and third of the year drew a lone helper from Lee.

Lowell finished 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Engineers went 0 for 5.

RPI returns to the ice tomorrow night, when it visits Merrimack College (7pm). Lowell hosts No. 7 Penn State tomorrow (6pm).
