TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Alex Aung won three individual events and a relay and three Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes from the women's swimming & diving team won multiple events as the Engineers swept a dual meet against Vassar College on Saturday at Robison Pool. The RPI men, which posted a 189-106 win, improve to 3-0, while the women, who won 150-149, are now 1-2. Vassar drops to 2-2 and 3-1.
Aung started the day on the victorious 200 medley relay team, for which he swam third and helped the squad, which also included Harrison Bass, Jonathan Yang and Steven Yu, to a time of 1:36.34. He then won in the 50 free, the 100 free and the 100 fly (52.16), which he captured by almost three seconds (55.13).
Bass also had multiple wins as he won the 100 backstroke and helped the 200 free relay to a victory, along with Yu, Yang and Graham Zola. The foursome had a time of 1:27.67, while the runner-ups came in at 1:32.30. Zola also had a win in the 200 free, while Yu was victorious in the 200 breaststroke.
Freshman Tony Min had a pair of individual wins, coming in first in the 200 butterfly (1:54.60) by more than six seconds (2:00.62) and winning the 400 individual medley (4:18.73) by nearly nine (4:27.66).
In the diving events, sophomore Matt Abraham and senior
Jessica Kugelman both had two top scores. Abraham won the 3-meter with 239.30 points and the 1-meter with 214.60, while Kugelman won with scores of 238.30 (1-meter) and 271.15 (3-meter). She won from three meters by nearly 83 points (188.25).
Freshman
Ola Nawrocki enjoyed a pair of wins by wide margins. She finished first in the 1000 free (11:05.04) by 14 seconds (11:19.79) and the 500 free (5:23.21) by eight (5:31.22).
Emily Mayoras, a senior, also had two individual wins as she captured the 50 free and 100 free for the Engineers, who are right back in action on Sunday against both The College of Saint Rose and Oneonta. The tri-meet will take place at Robison Pool beginning at 1pm.
