Potsdam, N.Y. – Senior Ella Shelton scored twice and added an assist while junior Elizabeth Giguere scored one and set up two other goals as the Clarkson University women's hockey team skated past Rensselaer 5-0 in ECAC Hockey action Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked seventh nationally, improved to 13-2-4 on the season and 4-1-2 in league contests while the Engineers remained winless at 0-17-1 and 0-7-0. Clarkson will face Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers were whistled for a penalty just 27 seconds into the game and Clarkson capitalized almost immediately. RPI cleared the zone on the faceoff, but the Knights picked up the puck behind their own net and began to skate back up ice. Elizabeth Giguere tapped a pass forward to Kayla Friesen near the blue line and the senior transfer sent a pass through the slot where Ella Shelton was waiting. Shelton chipped the puck past Engineers' goaltender Amanda Rampado with just 47 seconds expired from the clock.

Seven minutes later Clarkson tallied again on a wild scrum in front. The Knights had trouble getting a solid shot, but Gabrielle David eventually collected the puck near the post and tossed it out in front where Ella Shelton was waiting, as she wristed a shot past the stick side of Rampado at 7:56 for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

Rensselaer had a chance with two power-play opportunities in close proximity but the Engineers came up empty. Freshman Hannah Price almost cashed in, but her shot was deflected and knocked off the post to keep RPI scoreless.

The next penalty was called on the Engineers late in the first period, and Clarkson would convert to take a 3-0 advantage into the locker room at the first intermission. Brooke McQuigge gained possession behind the net and sent a pass along the boards to Shelton who then gave the puck to Giguere just a stride or two in front of the blue line. Giguere took her time and wristed a shot on the RPI goal, but McQuigge had cycled into the slot and was awarded the goal when she ticked the puck past Rampado with 16 seconds left in the period.

Though Clarkson held just a 10-4 advantage in shots through the first period, the Knights would dominate for the remainder of the contest, taking 28 shots on the RPI goal and holding the Engineers to just seven attempts. Clarkson put the game away in the second period with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the stanza. Giguere picked up puck near center ice on a turnover and then played a little game of give-and-go with Friesen, eventually finishing off the play at the 4:13 mark for her 19th goal of the season. Just four minutes later, Clarkson saw junior defenseman Meaghan Hector score her first goal of the season a she wristed a shot from the bottom of the right circle past Rampado at 8:22, with assists going to Michaela Pejzlova and Gabrielle David.

Clarkson finished with a 38-11 advantage in shots on goal as Marie-Pier Coulombe and Marie Dedert combined for 11 saves. Coulombe made 10 saves in the first 54 minutes and Dedert denied one shot in the final six minutes. For RPI, Rampado stopped 32 shots. Clarkson went 2-for-2 on its power-play attempts while the Engineers came up empty in their four tries up a skater.
