CANTON, N.Y. - The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team scored three goals in the second period to top Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday afternoon at SUNY Canton Roos House. With the win, the Saints improve to 6-7-5 overall (2-3-2 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 0-18-1 (0-8-0 ECAC Hockey).
Following a scoreless first period in which St. Lawrence held a 7-4 shot advantage, the Saints broke through for the game's first goal at 4:10 of the second. Maggie McLaughlin skated up the rigtht wing boards and fired a shot over the left shoulder of RPI freshman netminder Ena Nystrom for her third goal of the season.Â
Six minutes later, Steph Keryluk jumped on a loose puck in the low slot and swatted home her first goal of the year. Assists went to Jacquie Diffley and Brittany Gout.
Jessica Poirier capped the scoring for the Saints at 12:45 of the middle frame, netting an unassited tally - her third of the season.
Lucy Morgan (3-4-5) picked up the win between the pipes for SLU, stopping all 21 shots she faced. Nystrom (0-12-1) had 36 saves at other end of the ice. St. Lawrence finished 0 for 2 on the power play, while the Engineers went 0 for 4.
RPI is now idle until Janary 4 and 5, when it travels to Dartmouth (6pm) and Harvard (3pm). St. Lawrence is off until January 7, when it visits Syracuse (6pm).
