TROY, N.Y. - Maggie McKenna scored on a free position shot at 3:55 of overtime and the University of Rochester defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 10-9 in a Liberty League women's lacrosse game at Renwyck Field. The Engineers drop to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Yellowjackets are now 3-3 and 1-1.
McKenna, a junior, and Katherine Woo, a senior, finished with a pair of goals and sophomore Mary Panepento had two goals with an assist to lead Rochester's offense. Jamison Seabury added a goal and an assist with four draw controls for the Yellowjackets, who got 10 saves from Carlie Bendavid.
Maddy Aslansan and
Lauren Guiry both scored twice for Rensselaer, who got five ground balls, three draw controls and a goal from
Nora Molino.
Aleena Milinski stopped seven shots in goal.
Rochester opened with the first two goals before
Becca De Rosa scored for RPI at 24:30. Kaileigh Davis notched her first of the season to put the 'Jackets back ahead by two and the teams traded the next four goals for a 5-3 Rochester lead at halftime.Â
Rensselaer erased the deficit and took a 7-5 lead by scoring the first four goals of the second half. Guiry tallied unassisted ta 26:07,
Erin Goodwin scored on a free position at 22:17, Guiry added a free position goal 2:02 later and
Abbey Salvon collected a pass from
Michelle Bolger and scored at 16:06.Â
McKenna's first of the game pulled Rochester to within one goal, but Aslansan scored her first for an 8-6 lead. Panepento and Wood both found the back of the net to tie the game at 8-8, but Aslansan's fifth of the season put RPI ahead 9-8 with 4:20 to play. The Yellowjackets needed just 50 seconds to tie the game as Anna Olsen scored unassisted with 3:30 remaining.
The team statistics were nearly as tight as the final score with Rensselaer outshooting its visitors 28-23 and holding a 22-16 edge in ground balls. Draw controls were even at 9-9.
RPI's next game is Saturday at RIT (2pm), while Rochester is back in action on Tuesday at Ithaca College (4pm). Both games are Liberty League contests.Â
