KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Three pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 7-1 victory over Anna Maria College, on Tuesday night at Osceola Heritage Park. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-2, while the Amcats drop to 4-2.
Sophomore
Ryan Yerby, who started the game for RPI, allowed just two hits over the first 4.0 innings, striking out five without a walk. He threw 58 pitches and relieved by senior
Kyle LaMantia to start the fourth. He struck out one and gave up one hit to earn the win. Sophomore
Chris Grome picked up the 4.0-inning save, striking out nine batters, with one walk. He gave up a run on five hits.
The Engineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to four singles. Sophomore
Richard Drum delivered a base hit up the middle that brought home Joe Curci and
Jack Vaccari. RPI then scored after Drum stole second and
Austin Lawrence came across the plate.
A Vaccari single made it a 4-0 game in the top of the second, before the Engineers plated two in the fourth. Curci doubled to deep right in the frame, bringing around
Jack Moncur and
Jake Defayette.
RPI pushes its lead to 7-0, when Vaccari tripled-home Defayette in the top of the sixth.
Anna Maria got on the board in the seventh, when freshman Jackson Dobek singled in a run.
The Engineers are back in action tomorrow morning against Gwynedd Mercy (9am) in the final game of their Spring Break trip. The Amcats return to the diamond on Thursday against Penn St.-Altoona (9:15am).
