TROY, N.Y. - After being among those receiving votes in the first four USILA / Warrior and New Balance Coaches Poll, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team has entered the top 20 in Division III, according to the latest listing. Rensselaer, which is 3-0, is ranked 18th with 48 points.
Under first-year head coach
Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh, RPI has defeated Keene State College (15-6), Coast Guard Academy (12-11) and MIT (16-6) for a 14.33 to 7.66 goals per game differential. It also lead its opponents in ground balls (105-89), caused turnovers (29-18), clear percentage (.848-.552) and save percentage (.596-.427).
Senior attack
JT Kelly (Acton, MA / Acton-Boxborough Regional) is first on team in assists with nine and points with 16. Two of his seven goals have come man-up and he has four ground balls and one caused turnover. Junior attack
Owen Putman (Ballston Lake, NY / Shenendehowa) is second or tied for second in goals (7, tied), assists (7) and points (14, tied), while ranking first in shots with 30. He has two man-up goals with six ground balls and a caused turnover.
Freshman attack
Cooper Urban (Glen Mills, PA / Salesianum School) is the team's leading goal scorer with nine goals, along with five assists for 14 points. A two-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week, he has put 15 of his 19 shots on goal (.789) and has picked up five ground balls.
Seniors
Keaton Ackermann (Erieville, NY / Cazenovia) and
Quinn Fettig (Bend, OR / Bend) lead the defense, combining for 11 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. Ackermann is first in caused turnovers (7) and Fettig is tied for second with eight ground balls.
Tyler Hancock (Eagle, CO / Vail Mountain School), a sophomore who has won 28 of 56 faceoffs (50%), has 15 ground balls.
Brian Doughty (Glenelg, MD / Glenelg), a sophomore, and
Kyle Botsford (Catonsville, MD / Mount St. Joseph), a freshman, have played the majority of time in goal. Doughty is 2-0 with a 5.33 goals against average and a .579 save percentage, while Botsford is 1-0 with a 10.20 average and a .600 save percentage. Doughty has four ground balls and Botsford has three.
Rensselaer, which was nationally-ranked throughout the latter part of the 2018 season, is back on the field on Saturday when it hosts Babson College at East Campus Stadium (2pm).
