No. 18 Men's Lacrosse Beats Babson, 14-8

TROY, N.Y. - Owen Putman and Lucas Bastarache combined for seven goals and nine points to lead the No. 18 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team to a 14-8 victory over Babson College in a non-league contest at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers are now 4-0, while the Beavers drop to 3-2.

The Engineers held a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, a 7-2 edge at halftime and a 14-4 advantage after three quarters. 

Will Killeen got the game's first goal when he finished a pass from Bastarache at 6:50 of the first quarter and JT Kelly doubled the lead after taking a feed from Putman at 5:24. Putman scored his first of the contest with 1:19 left in the opening frame. 

Babson's Samuel Mishkind pulled the visitors to within two goals with a sharp angle shot while man-up, but Rensselaer scored the next four goals for a 7-1 lead with 4:49 to play in the first half. Four different players scored, including Bastarache and Tim Oslislo both unassisted. Matthew MacCune tallied with 49 seconds left to break RPI's string.

The Engineers started a new string in the third quarter by scoring the first five goals of the second half. Bastarache scored 37 seconds in before Cliff Kigar, Putman (twice) and Cooper Urban helped to make it 12-2 with 8:46 left in the third. Babson scored the next two, but Bastarache and Kelly countered heading into the final 15 minutes.

The Beavers scored four times in the fourth quarter with Mason O'Hanlon notching a pair. MacCune had an assist on one of the tallies. He and O'Hanlon both finished with two points. Hutch Torregrosa won 8 of 16 faceoffs and had a game-high seven ground balls and John Antaya had six ground balls with three caused turnovers. Christopher Aranalde had 11 saves with 14 goals against.

Putman added a ground ball and two caused turnovers and Bastarache had two ground balls. Urban had a goal and three assists, Kigar had two goals and an assist and Kelly scored twice with one helper. Brian Doughty stopped seven shots in the first half and three other goalies combined to make three saves in the final 30 minutes.

RPI is right back at home on Wednesday when it faces Plattsburgh State in a non-league contest.
