Vassar Edges Women's Lacrosse in Overtime

Abbey Salvon leads Engineers on big second half comeback, but Brewers prevail

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar College women's lacrosse team scored 11 goals in the first half, but needed overtime to edge Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 16-15, on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Brewers improve 6-6 overall (3-4 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 6-5 (3-5 Liberty League).

Vassar scored four of the first five goals to jump out to a 4-1 advantage after just 4:24 of play. Fiona MacLeod netted the final two tallies on the run. Sophomore Nora Molino and senior Maddie Aslansan got the visits back within 4-3 with 17:13 left in the half.

The Brewers then went on a 5-1 scoring run to open up a 9-4 avantage with just 6:49 remaining in the opening stanza.

Senior Abbey Salvon haulted the run for RPI, but Vassar tacked on two more before the horn for an 11-5 lead after 30 minutes.

Rensselaer came out firing after both teams were kept off the board for three minutes of the second. A 6-2 Engineers run, which included three Salvon talilies, brought the visitors to within 13-11.

Alessandra Fable netted the fourth of her five goals on the day to push the Vassar advantage to 14-11, but four different Engineers followed with tallies to take their first lead of the game at 15-14 with 3:44 left in regulation.

Tess Waters netted the tying goal with four seconds left in regular time, before Fable potted the winner at 4:04 of the overtime stanza.

Jackie Malloy made five saves for the hosts in earning the victory, while Aleena Milinski had 10 stops at the other end of the field. Salvon finished with a game-high seven points on six goals and one assist. Aslansan (2 goals, 2 assists) and junior Liz Brady (1 goal, 3 assists) had four points apiece.

RPI is back in action tomorrow afternoon, when it visits Bard College (12pm). The Brewers host Ithaca College tomorrow (3pm).
