Women's Lacrosse Falls to Skidmore, 17-12

Engineers draw to within two late, but Thoroughbreds hold one for Liberty League win

TROY, N.Y. –  Senior Cas Szwajkowski scored seven goals to lead the Skidmore College women's lacrosse team to a 17-12 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Tuesday night at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 7-3 overall (4-1 Liberty League), while the Engineers drop to 5-3 (2-3 Liberty League).

Szwajkowski spread her scoring throughout the contest, with four coming in the second half. Emily Hirsh (3 goals) and Natalie LaBeau (1 goal, 2 assists) each chipped in with three points for Skidmore.

RPI saw senior Michelle Bolger scored five goals, while classmate Lauren Guiry had four. Three others had three points for the Engineers, including sophomore Nora Molino (1 goal, 1 assist).

The Engineers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, thanks to tallies from senior Abbey Salvon and Guiry. LaBeau and Hirsh quickly answered for the visits to tie the game at 2-2, seven minutes in.

A man-up goal from Bolger gave the Engineers a brief 3-2 advantage, but Szwajkowski knotted things once again, halfway through the opening frame.

Skidmore followed with two more goals to take a 5-3 lead, before Bolger potted a pair to make it 5-5 with 9:28 remaining in the first half.

The Throughbreds then struck for five straight goals in under five minutes, with two coming off the stick of Szwajkowski to open up a 10-5 lead. Molino's 18th goal of the season brought the hosts within 10-6 at the half.

RPI scored four of the first six goals of the second half to cut the deficit to 12-10 with 16:21 to play in the game. Bolger had two of the Engineers' tallies during the run.

Hirsh and Szwajkowski created some separation by scoring the game's next two goals for a 14-10 advantage. Guiry and Szwajkowski then traded goals just over 30 seconds apart to make it 15-11.

After Guiry netted her 16th goal of the game to draw within 15-12 with 8:37 remaining, the Thoroughbreds were able to kill the clock, while scoring twice down the stretch.

Caroline Kenlon (7-3) made five saves, while Aleena Milinski (5-3) had seven stops at the other end of the field.

RPI is back in action next Wednesday, when it visits Union College (4pm). Skidmore hosts the Dutchwomen on Saturday (12pm).
