Ryan Yerby threw a complete game shutout to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Vassar College in Game 1 of a Liberty League doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Robison Field. The Engineers, who dropped Game 2 by a 5-4 score, are now 11-11 overall (7-5 Liberty League), while the Brewers move to 11-13 (5-7 Liberty League).
Yerby (3-1) allowed seven hits and a walk over 7.0 innings for the complete game victory. He struck out four and finshed with 99 pitches thrown. Matt McGannon (2-2) took the loss in the opener, surrendering two runs on three hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Freshman right field
Cole Paquin got the Engineers on the board with an RBI-groundout in the bottom of the third, scoring classmate
Jack Moncur from third. Later in the frame, junior
Jack Vaccari came home on a balk.
Vassar got two runners on with two outs in the fourth, but Yerby induced a ground ball by Tanner Blough to end the threat. The Brewers put two more on in the sixth with a pair of base hits, but another ground ball out ended the inning.
Yerby was able to retire the Brewers in order in the seventh to hold on for the win.
In Game 2, Vassar jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, picking up individual runs in the first and second innings. A wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Vaccari tied the game for the Engineers in the bottom of the third.
Freshman catcher
Freddy Reichelt then came through a two-out, two-run double in the fourth - the first hit of collegiate career, that scored seniors
Michael Arboleda and
Austin Lawrence. The Engineers held the lead until the eighth inning.
Vassar got one run back in the top of the seventh, when Jason Salerno grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, bringing home Daniel Bonfiglio from third. The Brewers then tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth, when Matt Martino was caught stealing, Connor Levchuck came home on the throw down to second.
Salerno then came through with the go-ahead single in the ninth inning, scoring Robert Pinataro, who had doubled to the gap in right center in the previous at bat.
Patrick FItzgerald earned the victory for the Brewers, working a scoreless eighth inning, before Joe Conti collected his second save of the season, pitching the ninth. RPI did get the tying run to third base with only one out, but pinch hitter
Noah Normyle grounded to third for the second out and
Richard Drum rolled out to second to end the game.
RPI is back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts Brockport (4pm). Vassar welcomes Williams to Prentiss Field in Poughkeepsie on Wednesday (4pm).
