TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team opens its 2019 season this weekend, when it hosts the Third Annual Engineers Cup at East Campus Stadium. The Engineers will take on Western Connecticut State on Friday (4pm), with Farmingdale State and Buffalo State to follow (6:30pm).
After the Bengals and Colonials take to the field for the early game on Saturday (12:30pm), Rensselaer will take on the Rams to close out the competition (3pm). The Engineers went 5-9-3 overall last season last year, including a 2-5-2 mark in Liberty League play. RPI defeated West Conn. State 2-1 in the season opener a year ago, before falling to Farmingdale, 1-0.
The Engineers averaged 0.65 goals per game last year, while allong 1.06 per contest. They outshot the opposition 17.2 to 10.8, however, and drew 67 corner kicks, while allowing only 47. Rensselaer also held a 292-183 shot advantage, including 139-82 on target.
Individually, RPI was paced offensively by
Emily Kaplan, who had three goals for six points, while
Emily Dunn (2 goals, 1 assist),
Jacqui Richard (2 goals, 1 assist) and
Whitney Wisnom (1 goal, 3 assists) all had five points. Wisnom earned Liberty League Rookie of the Year honors, registering 71 shots, including 29 on target. She had one game-winning tally and was 1 for 1 from the penalty spot.
In goal,
Joey Lyons went 5-9-2 with a 1.09 goals against average and a .772 save percentage, collecting three shutouts. She had 61 total saves on the season.
