ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Freshman
Arik Duncan scored the overtime-winning goal in his first collegiate contest, lifting the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to 2-1 victory at Elizabethtown College, on Friday night at Ira R. Herr Field. With the win, the Engineers open the season at 1-0, while the Blue Jays are 0-1.
Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, junior center back
Trevor Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal) brought the visitors even with a 90th minute tally – the 11th of his career. After receiving a pass from sophomore
Paul Silva (Wayne, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), Bisson lobbed a shot past Blue Jays goalkeeper Kevin Del Cid (0-1) with just 23 seconds left in regulation.
After a scoreless 10 minutes of overtime, the Engineers won it early in the second. Junior
Michael Harten (Merrick, NY/Sanford H. Calhoun) delivered a free kick into a crowded penalty area. Bisson was able to settle the ball for Duncan, who finished off first RPI goal, giving the Engineers the win in the 103rd minute.
Elizabethtown netted its only goal in the 25th minute, when Tate Mohney corralled a ball in the box, before turning and ripping home his first goal of the year, just inside the post.
Sophomore
Luke Brezak (Camano Island, WA/The Overlake School) made five saves to improve to 1-0 on the year, while Del Cid had six. The Engineers outshot Elizabethtown 18-10, including 8-6 on goal. Corner kicks were even at five apiece.
RPI returns to the field tomorrow at Dickinson College (5pm), while the Blue Jays hosts Plattsburgh State (5pm).
