Jen Richardson and sophomore
Marissa Florio combined to make 17 saves but it was not enough for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team, which lost 5-1 at No. 13 Montclair State University in its first road game of 2019. The Engineers drop to 0-2, while the Red Hawks are now 1-0.
Richardson had five saves in the first quarter and four in the second with one goal against, while Florio made five stops in the third and and three more in the fourth in dropping to 0-2. Rensselaer's goal came from senior
Katina Shiomos, who scored off a rebound for her first goal of the season. Freshman
Morgan Lee had an assist on the tally, which pulled RPI to within 4-1 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Montclair was led on the score sheet by Yael Yonah, who had two fourth quarter markers.
Kelly Watson gave the Red Hawks the lead 8:32 into the game and the score remained that way until they tallied twice within a six minute span in the third quarter. Watson added an assist on the eventual game-winning goal.
Three goalies combined for the win for Montclair, which had a 25-4 edge in shots and 10-3 lead in penalty corners.
