Women's Soccer and Farmingdale Draw, 0-0

Engineers outshoot the Rams, 14-8, in Engineers Cup finale

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team drew with Farmingdale State College, 0-0, on Saturday afternoon at East Campus Stadium, the final game of the Engineers Cup. With the tie, RPI stays unbeaten on the season at 1-0-1, while the Rams also move to a 1-0-1 mark.

Rensselaer controlled play early on, recording the game's first six shots, including a 21st minute effort from senior winger Emily Kaplan (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) that was kept out nicely by Rams senior goalkeeper Daniella Ford (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka).

Ten minutes later, senior Alexis Castrellon (Conroe, TX/Battlefield) saw her free kick attempt, from 35 yards out, sail over the bar.

Farmingdale State finally registered its first shot attempt in the 35th minute, when junior Meagan Murdocco (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) stepped into a right-footed blast that was smothered by Engineers' senior keeper Joey Lyon (Harwood, MD/Southern).

The second half of regulation was much more even with shots favoring the visitors by a 7-6 margin.

RPI had the better of the scoring opportunities, however, including a 46th minute try from the top of the 18 by Kaplan that found the crossbar. The rebound caromed right back out to Castrellon, who struck a left-footed shot cleanly, but it was blocked by a defender.

Farmingdale sophomore Emily Zeblisky (Northport, NY/Northport) got in behind the RPI defense in the 58th minute, the flag went up for offside. Lyons made a sliding stop on the potential breakaway chance for good measure.

Sophomore Whitney Wisnom (Hillsborough, CA/Design Tech.) got all of a left-footed shot from just inside the box, but she was denied by a diving Ford, in the 63rd minute.

The game remained scoreless after 90 minutes and overtime ensued. The first period went by with just one RPI attempt – a drive from Wisnom that went wide right. Junior Olenka Soko (Fort Worth, TX/Byron Nelson) then turned the best chance for either side in extra time, when she received a pass up the right flank and sent a bounding shot just a few feet wide of the left post.

Lyons (1-0-1) made four saves for the second straight day to record her 19th career shutout. The mark is six behind the school record holder and RPI Athletics Hall of Famer, Laura Gregor '00. Ford (1-0-1) finished with five saves at the other end of the field.

Rensselaer is unbeaten after its first two game for the first time since 2016, when it started 4-0. The Engineers are back in action next Saturday, when they visit Plattsburgh State for a 5pm kick-off. Farmingdale visits Trinity College (CT) on Wednesday at 5:30pm.
