Women's Soccer Suffers First Loss of 2019

Engineers shutout streak ends in 1-0 defeat at Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Katie Matott scored the game's only goal midway through the first half to lead the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday night at the Fieldhouse Soccer Complex. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-0 on the year, while the Engineers drop to 1-1-1.

Matott headed home a cross from the right wing by Allison Seidman in the 21st minute for her first goal of the season. The Engineers registered the first two shots of the game, but the goal came after four straight directed at the visitors' net, including a pair of shots on goal from Kirsten Villemaire and Abigail Seamans.

After the Cardinals scored, RPI picked up its play at the offensive end, generating four attempts at goal, but none were able to find the frame. Sophomore Whitney Wisnom notched all of her team-high four shots in the opening 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Cardinals got off to a hot start, forcing Rensselaer senior goalkeeper Joey Lyons to make a pair of saves on six shots in the opening 12 minutes of the frame. Lyons then made a pair of stops with just under 10 minutes to play, keeping the Engineers within striking distance.

RPI made its push in the final few minutes, getting shots from senior Meagan Lettko and sophomore Meghan Huang, as well as a late corner, but were unable to find the equalizer. Lyons (1-1-1) had seven saves, while Julia Ennis was not tested on nine Engineers attempts.

The Engineers return to the field on Wednesday, when they visit Smith College (4:30pm). Plattsburgh hosts Middlebury on Wednesday (7pm).
