TROY, N.Y. – Freshman
Josh Gaudiano scored the overtime-winning penalty to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over second-ranked SUNY Oneonta, on Wednesday afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Red Dragons, who fall for the first time in 2019, are 5-1.
Trailing 1-0 in the waning moments of regulation, the Engineers drew level on a right-footed shot from the box by junior center back
Trevor Bisson (Baton Rouge, LA/Episcopal). After a turnover in the midfield, sophomore
Michael Harten (Merrick, NYSanford H. Calhoun) lifted a ball ahead to Bisson, who took a touch before ripping a low shot into the left corner of the net. The goal, which came with just 52 seconds on the clock, was Bisson's third of the season.
Just three minutes into overtime, Gaudiano (Manhattan Beach, CA/Mira Costa) drew a foul on the right side of the penalty area. The winger stepped up the spot and rifled home a shot into the top left corner of the net to win the game. The tally for Gaudiano was his four in the last five games and it came on his eighth attempt of the match.
After a scoreless opening half, the Red Dragons got on the board first in the 69th minute. Sophomore Jeremy Pantoni (Goshen, NY/Goshen) slipped a low cross behind the RPI back line and senior Witman Hernandez (Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) got a toe the ball, sneaking it past Engineers sophomore keeper
Luke Brezak (Camano Island, WA/The Overlake School) for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Oneonta finished with a narrow 18-15 edge in shots and 5-4 advantage in corners. Junior goalkeeper Francesco Scotti (Commack, NY/Commack) had four saves, while Brezak, who improves to 5-0 on the year, had eight at the other end of the field.
Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday, when it visits SUNY Geneseo (3:30pm), while the Red Dragons travel to RIT on Saturday (4pm).
