TROY, N.Y. - Stevens Institute of Technology scored two second half goals to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 2-1 in a non-league field hockey game at Harkness Field. The Ducks improve their winning streak to three games and are now 5-3. The Engineers fall to 0-7.
The Engineers took the lead in the first quarter off a penalty corner at 9:24. Sophomore
Kaitlyn Stulen started the play with a pass to
Charisse Stakutis to the left side of the circle. The senior pulled the ball into the arc and fired a low shot past the goalkeeper for her second tally of the season.Â
With no goals in the second period, the first half ended with Rensselaer leading, though Stevens had a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in penalty corners.
The Ducks tied it up in the third quarter after sustained pressure in the offensive zone that led to eight consecutive penalty corners. It was on their eighth attempt that senior Ireland Tawney collected a loose ball in front of the cage, wheeled around for a shot and found the back of the cage. The goal, her second of the season, came with under three minutes left in the third quarter (42:45).
More than 11 minutes into the fourth quarter was when the Ducks went ahead. RPI goalkeeper
Jen Richardson made a point blank save on a Skylar Migliaccio shot, but junior Brynn Froehlich picked up the rebound and found the back of the cage on Richardson's blocker side. For Froehlich, the goal was her third of the season for Stevens, which had 25 shots and 20 penalty corners.
Richardson stopped eight shots in goal, including five in the second quarter, while Emily Franco (0 saves) earned the win on the other end. Junior
Emma Lewis had a pair of defensive saves for RPI, while
Mikayla Berman had one.
The Engineers are on the road at nationally-ranked Vassar College next Saturday (1pm) in its first Liberty League contest. Stevens hosts Drew University on Wednesday at 7pm and then travels to King's College on Saturday for its first MAC Freedom game.
