TROY, N.Y. - Freshman
Will Rubin scored 17 points and four others also reached double digits as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 74-63 win over Skidmore College at East Campus Arena. The Engineers remain perfect in Liberty League play with a 5-0 record. They are 10-2 overall. The Thoroughbreds fall to 3-9 and 2-3.
Rubin, a guard, led RPI with his 17 points with the help of three long three-pointers. He ws 4 of 5 overall while also collecting a rebound and an assist off the bench. Sophomore
Dom Black had 13 points with five rebounds, five assists and three steals and
Kevin Davis and
Patrick Mahoney both scored a dozen points.
Mason Memmelaar had 11 points and tied Black for the team-high in boards with five. He also had three assists and a pair of steals.
Junior guard Ty Lamport led Skidmore with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting, along with a game-high six rebounds. Freshman Tautvydas Kupstas also connected on 7 of 12 shots, including four three-pointers, for 18 points while playing all 40 minutes.Â
The game was a one-possession contest up until the midway point of the first half when RPI'sÂ
Jeffrey Coulter hit a three-pointer for a 23-17 lead with 8:55 to play. Riley Greene and Kupstas answered to get the visitors to within 23-22, but a Rubin three and an Angbazo layup made it 28-22 with just under six minutes left. Kupstas and Rubin traded triples and RPI scored the next five points for a 10-point margin, which was the margin going into the locker room at the break (37-27).
A Greg Skoric dunk pulled Skidmore to within eight points three minutes into the second half, but the Thoroughbreds could not get any closer than that in the final 17 minutes. RPI's advantage got to as many as 15 three times, the final one being on a basket by Black with 4:31 to play (64-49).Â
Rensselaer, which is in its longest winning streak since the 1990-91 team won 18 in a row, is back on the court on Friday when it plays at RIT in its first Liberty League road game of the year. Skidmore travels to Clarkson for a conference game on Friday. Both contests begin at 7:30pm.
