Nicos Prokopiou swam to two individual victories and Matthew Abraham dove to a pair as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's swimming & diving team defeated Skidmore College 153-73 in a dual meet on Saturday. The Engineers keep their record unblemished at 7-0, while the Thoroughbreds fall to 4-3.
Prokopiou, a junior, won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.56 before being the first to touch the wall in the 100 backstroke. He won that event in 56.07, which was more than two seconds ahead of the runner-up (59.45).
A sophomore, Abraham captured the 3-meter competition with a total score of 238.73, which was nearly 33 points ahead of the second place finisher's 205.13. He then captured the 1-meter event with 205.73 points, a nearly 16-point difference from the runner-up (189.30).
Also earning multiple victories - one individual and one relay - were freshmen
Aleksey Makarov and
Tony Min. The both swam on the 400 free relay team after winning the 1000 free and 100 fly, respectively. Makarov's time in the long distance freestyle was approximately nine seconds ahead of the second place finisher (10:29.57 - 10:38.11). Min won the butterfly event in 52.56.
Alex Aung (200 free),
Harrison Bass (50 free) and
Chris Evans (100 free) also had individual victories for the Engineers, who are back in action next Saturday at Hamilton for their final dual meet of the season.
