ALBANY, N.Y. – Freshman Bella McKee recorded her first collegiate shutout to lead the Union College women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Third Annual Mayor's Cup, on Saturday afternoon the Times Union Center. With the win, the Dutchwomen improve to 5-17-5 overall (5-7-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 0-26-1 (0-16-0 ECAC Hockey).
After two scoreless periods, Union broke onto the scoreboard at 14:43 of the third, when sophomore Grace Heiting (Woodbury, MN/Gentry Academy) snuck a shot near post from the bottom of the left circle for her fifth goal of the year. The lone assist on the eventual game-winning goal went to junior Angelica Melone (Riverside, IL/Chicago Mission).
Freshman Carmen Merlo (St. Louis, MO/Shattuck St. Mary's) added an empty-netter with 9.9 seconds remaining for a 2-0 advantage. The unassisted goal was her second of the year.
Union sophomore Maia Martinez (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove High School) turned in the best chance of the first period when she hit the post with under four minutes remaining the period.
McKee (5-14-5) stopped all 16 shots she faced, while RPI freshman
Amanda Rampado turned away 34, including 13 in the second period alone.
The Engineers are back in action next Saturday, when they visit Syracuse (3pm). Union hosts St. Lawrence on Tuesday (6pm).
