Scharlow Captures High Jump at Crimson Elite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Jacy Scharlow jumped 1.70 meters on her first attempt at that height to capture the high jump and lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute track & field teams at the Crimson Elite hosted by Harvard University.

Scharlow was one of only two Division III student-athletes in the 13-competitor event. The other was teammate Maya Verma, who reached 1.55 meters to finish in a tie for 10th place. The runner-ups, student-athletes from Division I UMass Lowell and South Florida both reached 1.70 meters on their second attempts.

Also standing out for the Engineers was senior Mark Shapiro, who was third in the weight throw and fifth in the shot put. He went a personal-best 17.52 meters in the weight, trailing only a pair of throwers from George Mason University, who reached 19.27 and 18.50 meters, respectively. In the shot put, Shapiro's maximum effort was 14.27 meters, which was just behind a Yale University thrower's 14.99 meters.

There were 10 competitors in the men's shot put and 14 in the weight throw. RPI had four throwers in both as Josh Cohen, Ben Zawislak and John Gonzalez also competed.

Rensselaer had numerous participants in track events as well with junior Neil Casimir boasting a fourth place finish in the 400 meter dash. He crossed the finish line in 50.12, which trailed a pair from Princeton University and a runner from South Florida. Leighton James (13th) and Luke Lyons (15th) also participated in the 23-person event.

In the women's 400, sophomore Madison Perez was 12th overall and first among RPI's three runners with a time of 1:01.10. Alyssa Richtarek was 13th and Kat Morin was 15th of the 19 in the field.

The multi-divisional meet was non-team scoring.
