UTICA, N.Y. - Senior
Maggie Bond led a group of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes that finished 1-8 in the 3000 meters and freshman
Jillian Lees won the mile for the women's track & field team, which finished in second place in the 13-school, multi-divisional Pioneer Open hosted by Utica College. The Engineers earned 97 points, which trailed only Plattsburgh State's 103. The host Pioneers were third with 89.50.
Bond ran the 3000 meters in a time of 10:04.50 with teammates
Andrea Squeri and
Isabel Caplazi running right behind her with finishing times of 10:05.50 and 10:26.74, respectively. Each of the next five - and 12 of the top 14 - to cross were from Rensselaer.
Lees earned her first career win with a mile time of 5:27.86, good enough to defeat the runner-up by nearly two seconds (5:29.78).
Sophomore
Willa Spaar joined Squeri with a second place finish when she ran the 60 Hurdles in 9.98, just off the pace of 9.86.
Rensselaer's other third place finishers included
Grace Heine in the high jump (1.36),
Julia Hubbard in the triple jump (10.18) and
Lorna Drexler in the weight throw (13.75).
The Engineers return to Utica for another meet next Saturday.
