Women's Hockey Honors Seniors on Saturday

Engineers fall to Dartmouth, 4-1, in home finale

TROY, N.Y. – Freshman CC Bowlby netted a pair of goals to the lead the Dartmouth College women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Big Green improve to 7-17-3 (4-13-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 0-31-1 (0-20-0 ECAC Hockey).

Rensselaer nearly opened the scoring with a minute left in the first, but Dartmouth sophomore Gabby Billing (Corcoran, MN/Minnesota Whitecaps) cleared a puck off her own goal line on the penalty kill, denying Engineers junior blueliner Madeleine Burnett (London, ON/Bluewater Hawks) of her first goal of the season.

Following a scoreless opening period in which RPI outshot the Big Green, 15-8, it was the visits who got on the board first 8:52 of the second. Freshman Currie Putrah (Fairbault, MN/Shattuck St. Mary's) tapped in a rebound from close range for her second goal of the season. Assists went to junior Emily McLaughlin (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie) and senior Sydney Hill (Redvers, SK/Warner Hockey School).

Bowlby (Edina, MN/Edina High School) doubled the Dartmouth advantage less than four minutes later, when she collected a loose puck just outside the crease and flipped home the first of her two on the day. The even game-winning tally drew helpers from junior Megan Cornell (Bloomington, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) and freshman Catherine Trevors (Oakville, ON/Appleby College).

The Big Green made it a 3-0 game at 5:35 of the third period on Bowlby's second of the game and 10th of the season. Receiving a pass at the top of the right circle, Bowlby toe-dragged past one defender before ripping a shot off the right post and in. The power play tally was assisted on by sophomores Lotti Odnoga (Gyor, Hungary/Vermont Academy) and Sara McClanahan (Wayzata, MN/Minnesota Jr. Whitecaps).

Sophomore Mikayla Capelle (Dawson Creek, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) cut the Engineers' deficit to 3-1 at 7:37 of the final frame, burying a rebound at the left side of the net for her first of the season. A shot from the right point by senior Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) was stopped by Dartmouth junior goaltender Kayla Wormsbecher (Mississauga, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros), but the carom kicked to Capelle, who had most of the net to shoot at and did not miss. Burnett collected the secondary assist on the play.

Trevors potted an empty-net goal at 17:41 of the third to cap the scoring. The unassisted tally was her 10th of the season.

Wormsbecher (3-5-0) finished with 34 saves, including all 15 shots she faced in the first period alone. RPI freshman Amanda Rampado (Stoney Creek, ON/Stoney Creek Sabres) also turned away 34 at the other end of the ice, with 16 coming the second.

The Engineers honored their five seniors, along with graduate student Claudia Black, prior to the contest.

RPI closes out its season next weekend, when it travels to Cornell and Colgate on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm). The Big Green host St. Lawrence and Clarkson next weekend.
