KEENE, N.H. - Sophomore
Cooper Urban had three goals and three assists, including one and three in a 7-goal second quarter, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team won on the road, defeating Keene State College 12-9 in a non-league game. The Engineers improve to 2-0, while the Owls drop to 0-1.
Following a first quarter that saw RPI hold a 2-1 lead on a pair of Urban markers, the Engineers exploded for seven second quarter goals - from seven different student-athletes. Brian Hatcher started things 1:20 into the frame before
Kevin Frega tallied just 27 seconds later.
Tim Oslislo made it 5-1 at 11:48 off an assist from Urban, who also had a helper on Frega's goal. Urban's third of the game, which was Rensselaer's sixth straight goal, came five minutes into the frame.
Keene State got back-to-back goals to pull to within 6-3, but
Ryan Raftery,
Owen Putman and
Connor Glosner scored within a 2:33 span to make it a 9-3 edge. The Owls tallied with 26 seconds left in the second for a 9-4 halftime score.
Putman scored a man-up goal from
Robby Gale to start the third quarter, but Keene State's Matthew Lemke answered off the face-off and the Owls got two more before Putman's third of the game gave the Engineers an 11-7 lead after three.
Joe Nutting scored his second of the contest for Keene State in the fourth, but
Tyler Nalls notched a man-up goal. Dave Wiedenfeld scored man-up for the Owls for the final margin.
Twelve different Engineers had at least one point with Urban and Putman (3 goals) earning multiple. Urban added 10 shots with seven on goal, while Putman, a senior, had 11 and seven.
Brian Doughty finished with 11 saves and a caused turnover in the cage for RPI, which caused 24 turnovers.
The Owls got 15 stops from Chase Chamberlin, who also picked up two ground balls. Lemke had a game-high 12 pickups, thanks in part to winning 15 of 23 face-offs. Nutting had two goals and two assists, while Connor Nolan scored once with two assists for the home team, which hosts Western New England on Tuesday at 4pm.
Rensselaer is back home on Wednesday against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (5pm).
