TROY, N.Y. - Senior Riley McNulty scored five goals with one assist and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy scored four straight goals to break a second half tie on its way to a 16-14 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a non-league men's lacrosse game at East Campus Stadium. The Bears improve to 2-1, while the Engineers drop to 2-1.
A midfielder, McNulty notched all of his points in the middle quarters when Coast Guard took the lead. He set up a Matty Johnson goal at 11:30 of the second to put the visitors ahead for the first time, 6-5. McNulty scored his first of the game less than two minutes later for a 7-5 advantage and then answered a
Will Hatcher marker with two more tallies only seven seconds apart. Hatcher, a junior, pulled RPI to within 7-6 at 7:06, but McNulty scored unassisted at 5:50 and then off a feed from Gunnar Brodfuehrer after the faceoff at 5:43.
Rensselaer got back to within a goal after a late second quarter goal from
Ryan Cole and a third period tally from
Owen Putman, but McNulty collected a Logan Tobias pass just 13 seconds after Putman's goal and scored to make it 10-8.Â
RPI's
Nicholas Colucci and Coast Guard's Jake Groff traded tallies before Colucci registered his second of the game and
Jason Bram scored his first to tie the game at 11-11 with 6:33 to play in the third quarter.
The Bears countered with consecutive goals by Taylor Gustafson, McNulty, Gustafson and Johnson to build their lead to a game-high four, 15-11, with 9:14 left in the second half. Colucci's third of the game and Cole's fourth made it 15-13 with 6:20 to play, but Will Iorio scored four minutes later to make it a three-goal lead. Cole concluded the scoring with an unassisted goal with 20 seconds left.
A junior midfielder, Cole led the Engineers with four goals on nine shots and three ground balls. Colucci had three goals and
Cooper Urban scored twice with two assists. Junior
Brian Doughty stopped 10 shots in the cage.
McNulty added seven shots, all on goal, with four ground balls. Johnson had three goals, while Iorio (2 goals, 1 assist) and Caleb Holdridge (1 goal, 2 assists) both had three points. Brodfuehre had a goal and an assist while winning 17 of 29 faceoffs with a game-high 11 ground balls. Senior Charles McAllister had 13 saves with four ground balls in picking up the win in net.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday at No. 1 Salisbury University (1pm), while Rensselaer travels to MIT on Saturday for a 3pm contest.
