MEDFORD, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) track & field teams had a select number of individuals compete at the Tufts University National Qualifying Meet and the Engineers came away with five top five finishes. The meet was non team scoring.
Junior Neil Casimir had RPI's lone victory when he was the first to cross the finish line in the 400 meter dash, defeating four others with his time of 50.18. He out-raced the runner-up by .08 seconds (50.26).
Senior thrower Mark Shapiro had a pair of second place finishes, going 14.89 meters in the shot put and 17.89 in the weight throw. He was just over a meter from winning the shot put, which had 10 throwers, and less than a meter from a victory in the weight.
Maggie Bond, a senior distance runner, was fourth overall - third among those attached - in the 3000 meters (9:56.34) and sophomore
Maya Verma was fifth in the high jump (1.64). Bond competed against 16 others and Verma jumped in a field of seven.
The next indoor action for Rensselaer's student-athletes is the NCAA Championship for those who qualify. That announcement will be made early next week.
